What the ratio is
Shoulder to waist ratio is your shoulder circumference divided by your waist circumference. A ratio of 1.5 means your shoulders measure one and a half times your waist.
It is worth knowing because it describes something bodyweight cannot. Two people can weigh the same and look completely different, and a large part of that difference is proportion rather than mass. The ratio also has a useful property for tracking progress: it is unaffected by your height, so it compares cleanly across people and across time.
You will see it called the V-taper, the Adonis Index, or the golden ratio. Those all refer to the same calculation, usually with 1.618 given as the target for men.
About that 1.618 figure
The number comes from the golden ratio, a mathematical proportion of roughly 1.618 that appears in geometry and has been attached to ideas of beauty for centuries. Applying it to shoulders and waists is a modern fitness-industry convention, not a finding from physiology.
Two honest points about it.
- It is an aesthetic convention, not a health marker. Nothing bad happens at 1.4 and nothing medically improves at 1.618. - Your skeleton sets much of it. Clavicle length and hip width are inherited and do not change with training. Someone with naturally broad shoulders starts closer to the target than someone with narrow ones, through no effort of their own.
Use it as a way of tracking your own change over time, not as a score to be judged against. The most useful comparison is your ratio now against your ratio six months ago.
How to measure accurately
Most bad results come from measuring the wrong thing, and there is one error that accounts for nearly all of them.
Shoulder circumference is not shoulder width. Width is the straight-line distance across your back from one shoulder point to the other, which is what a tailor measures for a jacket. Circumference is the distance all the way around. They are different numbers and this calculator needs the circumference. If you enter a width, your ratio will come out close to 1.0 or below and the calculator will tell you something is wrong.
- Shoulders. Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides. Wrap a soft tape all the way around the widest part of your shoulders and upper chest, roughly level with the top of your armpits. Keep it parallel to the floor. A helper makes this considerably easier.
- Waist. Measure at the level of your navel, standing normally. Breathe out and do not pull your stomach in. Keep the tape snug against the skin without compressing it.
- Repeat once. Take each measurement twice and use the average. A centimetre of error on the waist moves the ratio by around 0.02.

The two ways to change it
There are only two, and one of them works considerably faster than the other.
Reduce the waist
Mathematically the quicker lever, because the waist sits on the bottom of the fraction. Taking 5 cm off a 85 cm waist with unchanged shoulders moves a 1.41 ratio to 1.50, which is a jump that would take many months to achieve by building muscle instead.

One caveat: a waist can only get so small, and chasing the ratio through the waist alone has an obvious floor and some real risks attached to it. Past a healthy body fat, the shoulders become the only sensible route.
Build the shoulders and upper back
Slower but with no ceiling and no downside. Three muscle groups create the width:
- Side deltoids. The single biggest contributor to shoulder circumference. Lateral raises are the exercise, and they need light weight and high quality rather than heavy swinging.
- Lats. They flare outward from the waist upward, which widens the upper torso and narrows the visual line at the bottom. Rows and pullovers build them.
- Upper back and rear delts. Add thickness across the whole measurement and improve posture, which itself changes how the taper reads.
