What FFMI actually measures

FFMI stands for Fat-Free Mass Index. It takes everything in your body that is not fat, which is muscle, bone, organs and water, and divides it by your height squared.

The formula is lean mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. If you weigh 80 kg at 15 percent body fat and stand 1.80 m, your lean mass is 68 kg and your FFMI is 21.0.

You will notice that is the same shape as the BMI formula. The difference is the input. BMI uses your whole bodyweight, so it cannot tell a muscular person from a heavy one, which is why plenty of trained athletes register as overweight. FFMI removes the fat from the calculation and answers a narrower, more useful question: how much muscle are you carrying for your frame?

Why there are two numbers

The calculator gives you a raw FFMI and a normalised one, and the normalised figure is the one to pay attention to.

Raw FFMI has a height bias built into it. Taller people tend to score lower for the same relative muscularity, simply because dividing by height squared penalises them. The normalisation adjusts every result to what it would be at 1.80 m, using the standard correction of adding 6.1 multiplied by the difference between 1.8 and your height in metres.

For someone exactly 1.80 m tall the two numbers are identical. Below that height the normalised figure is higher, above it lower. All the interpretation bands below refer to the normalised number.

The honest caveat about accuracy

This is worth understanding before you take your result too seriously.

FFMI is only as accurate as your body fat percentage, and body fat percentage is difficult to measure well. Home methods carry real error. Bioimpedance scales can be out by several percentage points and are affected by hydration. Calliper readings depend heavily on who is taking them. Visual estimation is a guess.

A three-point error in body fat moves FFMI by roughly 0.6 to 0.8, which is enough to shift you a whole band. So treat the number as a rough position rather than a precise score, and if you are tracking it over time, use the same measurement method every time. A consistent method with some error is far more useful than switching between methods that each have less.

On the natural limit claim

FFMI is often presented as a test for whether someone trains drug-free, usually with 25 given as the ceiling. That comes from a 1995 study of 157 men, and it is worth being careful with.

What the research supports is that values above roughly 25 to 26 are uncommon in drug-free lifters. What it does not support is treating any individual number as proof of anything. Genetics vary considerably, the original sample was small, and the body fat estimates feeding those historical figures had the same accuracy problems described above.

If your result comes out unusually high, the most likely explanation is that your body fat percentage is underestimated, not that you have exceeded human limits.

How to actually use it

The single figure is less interesting than the direction of travel. Three practical uses:

  • Check whether you are gaining muscle or just weight. If your bodyweight goes up over three months and your FFMI goes up with it, you have added lean mass. If your weight rises and FFMI stays flat, the gain is mostly fat.
  • Check whether you are keeping muscle while losing fat. During a fat loss phase, weight falling with FFMI holding steady is exactly what you want. FFMI falling alongside weight means you are losing muscle too, which usually means not enough protein, not enough resistance training, or too aggressive a deficit.
  • Set a realistic expectation. Moving from 19 to 21 is a substantial, achievable first goal. Moving from 23 to 25 is years of work and may not be available to you at all.

Recalculate every eight to twelve weeks rather than weekly. Lean mass changes slowly enough that more frequent measurement mostly captures measurement noise.

For men, around 18 to 20 is average for someone untrained, 20 to 22 indicates a visibly trained build, and 22 to 23 is the muscularity of committed lifters. For women the equivalent bands sit roughly four points lower.
